Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park was the first park in the U.S. National Park system and one of the first large areas in the world preserved for its scenic beauty. You could spend months there and still only see a small part of it. Thousands of pictures of the park are online. Here are a few more.

Geysers and Hotsprings

Yellowstone is home to one of the largest collection of geysers and hotsprings in the world. The park was preserved largely on account of the thermal features. The geysers and hotsprings produce a very strange and often alien looking landscape that really needs to be seen (and smelled) in person to fully appreciate.

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

One of the most impressive features in the frontcountry of Yellowstone is the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Here the Yellowstone River has cut a deep canyon into the yellowish, sulphur rich ground. The Lower Falls are at the head of this canyon which extends for miles.

Wildlife

Yellowstone is famous for its wildlife. Grizzly Bears, Moose and Elk are frequently seen there. I was not so fortunate. I did see lots of Bison, Mule Deer, and some smaller denizens of the park. The Bison were everywhere, including the campground and thermal areas.

Waterfalls

Of course, Yellowstone has waterfalls. There are over 200 of waterfalls scattered throughout the park. Many of those are hidden away deep in the back country, but there are more than a dozen that can be seen with only a short walk from your car.
