Alger County lies along the mid section of Michigan's Lake Superior shoreline. It contains the Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore, the Grand Island National Recreation Area, parts of the Hiawatha National forest and is full of things to do in all seasons. In the winter cross country skiing, ice climbing and snowmobiling are popular. A dog sled race also passes through town. In summer boat cruises, hiking and biking are among the many recreational opportunities. Fall has its colors, and Spring is the best time to see the many waterfalls. Some of them are roadside waterfalls like Alger Falls, but others like Chapel Falls and Rock River Falls require some hiking. The area includes two 100 foot waterfalls, Laughing Whitefish Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.
Munising is the population center of Alger country. From downtown Munising you can head east on H-58 to find Munising Falls, Tannery Falls and MNA Falls on the east end of town. If you continue farther east into the Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore you can find Miners Falls off of Miners Falls Road. Chapel Falls and Spray Falls require long hikes to reach. Sable Falls is a short walk from your car, but about a 90 minute drive from Munising.
