Stony Brook Falls

Lower Falls, July 2002

State: New York

Location: Steuben County

Height: 40, 20, 45

Crest: 40?

Water Source: Stony Brook Creek

Summary: Pretty, but a bit crowded and not as impressive as some other nearby waterfalls. A good stop between Letchworth and Watkins Glen.

Stony Brook State Park is located off of NY 36, just off of I-390 by Dansville. It is not far from Letchworth State Park, and is a nice stop between Letchworth and Watkins Glen and other Falls in the Finger Lakes area.

The Park has all sorts of activities and is quite popular and well visited. The gorge trail follows the creek from the lower park to the upper park. There are numerous small falls and areas to play in the water. There are three main falls. The lower falls is the most impressive of the three, followed by the upper falls. The gorge trail does not actually go all the way to the upper falls, and . you will probably have to get your feet wet if you want to see the upper falls.

There used to be a bridge over the gorge near the upper falls. The supports are still visible in the river and on the sides of the gorge.

Nearby Falls

Sugar Creek Glen and Stones Falls are both in the Dansville area. Grimes Glen and Tannery Creek are about 30 miles to the east. Letchworth State Park is about 30 miles to the west. Buttermilk Falls State Park, Lucifer Falls, Taughannock Falls,Watkins Glen, She-Qua-Ga Falls, Eagles Nest, Hector and probably a hundred others are within an hour or two drive.
