Summary: Dark Hollow Falls is the easiest to visit, and one of the most impressive, of the many waterfalls in Shenandoah National Park. A short downhill hike of less than a mile takes you to this scenic waterfall.

Of the many waterfalls in Shenandoah National Park, Dark Hollow Falls is the closest to Skyline Drive. A downhill hike of about .5 miles takes you to this scenic waterfall where the Hogcamp Branch of the Rose River tumbles down 70 feet over a series of drops. The only hard part about the hike is getting back, because it is uphill all the way.

The main fall consists of two drops. The uppermost drop is the most scenic in my opinion. Just below the main falls, there are two more drops, both of which are narrow chutes around 20 feet high. You can easily see both of them from the trail that descends from the main falls.

The trail begins at mile post 50.7 on the Skyline Drive. The trail follows a tributary of the Hogcamp Branch down to the falls. There are stairs on the trail. Hogcamp Branch continues to drop below the falls.

Nearby Falls

There are a lot of waterfalls of various sizes in Shenandoah National Park. If you continue down the Dark Hollow Falls Trail, you will reach the Rose River Loop Trail. A 5.5 round trip hike will take you past Dark Hollow and Rose River Falls. Elsewhere in Shenandoah you can find White Oak Falls, Cedar Falls, South River Falls, Lewis Spring Falls, Doyles River Falls, Jones Run Falls and Overall Run Falls.
