Buttermilk Falls is a 46' plunge located in a nature area east of Pittsburgh. At 46 feet, this is the tallest waterfall in western Pennsylvania. The falls is a bit off the beaten track, but is fairly easy to visit. A well maintained trail leads to a platform overlooking the falls. There is no established way down into the gorge, but less maintained trails lead across the creek for additional views of the falls. The walk to the falls is less than a quarter mile.
The falls is located south of US 22 east of Pittsburgh. From 22, head south on Clay Pike Road, which is about 11 miles east of Blairsville, and 20 miles west of Ebensburg. Head south 1.4 miles and take a left. There is a small sign. This is a narrow road. Follow it to the end. There is a small parking area, and a restroom, but no other amenities.
The land around the falls was once owned by Mr Rogers' grandfather, and Mr Rogers spent time here as a child.
This is one of several "Buttermilk" Falls in Pennsylvania. Buttermilk Falls in Homewood is a 90 mile drive to the west, and the very small Buttermilk Falls near Kittanning is only 45 miles away. The other Buttermilk Falls are all in the eastern part of the state.
Nearby Falls
Paint Falls is about 25 miles to the south east. Jackson Falls is about 40 miles to the north west. Cucumber Falls, and Ohiopyle Falls is about 60 miles to the south west.
