Buttermilk Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in New Jersey. The seasonal creek tumbles down the side of a cliff on its way to Flat Brook and then to the Delaware River.
This is a road side falls, but the road can be a bit rough. Mountain Road is unpaved, and has many a good size hole in it. You will have to travel on this road for about 2.5 miles from either direction to reach the falls. To readh the falls from Dingmans Ferry, head east on 739 and cross the Delaware River. You will have to pay a $1.00 toll to cross the bridge, unless you can convince them you are on your way to church or a funeral. After you cross the bridge take the first right and drive 1.9 miles. Continue on this road for a bit over 5 miles. The name changes from Old Mine Road to Walpack Road, but you just need to continue relatively straight. Take a left on to Main Street when you reach the old town site, then turn right on to Brook Road. This is where the road starts to get rough. Continue for about 2.5 miles and the falls will be on your left. There is a parking area on the right.
A stair way climbs up to the top of the falls, giving you a nice view of some of the waterwheels created by the water sliding down the rock face. The stairs are part of the Buttermilk Falls Trail. This steep 1.4 mile trail leads to the Appalachian trail.
Nearby Falls
There are a number of other seasonal falls in the area. The 40' Silver Spray falls is about a mile away. There is a trail, but it is apparently easy to miss the falls. The much smaller Tillman Falls is about 2.5 miles away. If you head south west on Old Mine Road you will pass a large number of seasonal falls of different sizes. The large Dingmans Falls is about 10 miles away. The somewhare larger Raymonds Falls is another 5 miles away. Bushkill Falls is 22 miles way by car, but less than 10 miles as the crow flies.
