Munising is the population center of Alger country, located on Munising Bay. It is home to several waterfalls and is an excellent base from which to explore many more falls as well as Grand Island, Pictured Rocks, the Hiawatha National Forest, and many other scenic areas. The Munising Formation, a shelf of sandstone that runs from Tahquamenon Falls to Laughing Whitefish Falls, is responsible for the large number of falls in the area.

In winter the waterfalls freeze over forming ice columns. Water seeping over and through the cliffs forms all sorts of interesting ice formations.
