Williamsport Falls is in Williamsport Indiana, which is about 1.5 hours northwest of Indianapolis, and about 2.5 hours south of Chicago. This waterfall is very often dry, and is even known as Dry Falls as a result. If you want to see the water falling stop by after a rainy spell or when the snow is melting. Route 28 leads into Williamsport from the north. There are signs will that direct you to the falls. From 28 take a left (south) onto Monroe Street. Just across the tracks on the left is a fire station, and behind the fire station is a parking area from which you can view the falls.
There is a trail that leads downstream into the gorge. If you are willing to get wet you can get behind the falls. The sign claims this is the highest free falling waterfall in Indiana. I have been told there are taller falls in southern Indiana, but they may not be free falling.
The caprock over which the creek falls is nearly 40 feet thick and is rather impressive even if the water is not flowing. Above the falls the water has carved a channel a few feet deep into the rock so that the water appears to shoot out of a notch in the cliff.
I visited this falls as the sun was setting on December 31, 2004. Due to the dim light that pictures are wispier than I prefer. The first time I visited the falls was in October and they were dry then.
Nearby Falls
Cataract Falls is about 2 hours to the south.
